Also, I completely agree with having a standardized dimension, but I am not sure where this exact dimension came from. Has there been a survey done of widely-used identity selectors to make sure that resolution is commonly used? (and it's entirely possible this was done and I just missed that part of the thread)

 There is no standard.

The closest thing to a standard is this well stated recommendation from the Shibboleth Project for the Shibboleth Embedded Discovery Service (EDS):

I am asking that InCommon "put a stake in the ground" and settle on 80w x 60h as a de facto standard.
