Survey on Remote Credentialing
The group discussed the outline provided by Ann, Louis and Mark S. concerning remote credentialing practices.
Scope – After discussion, it was agreed that the scope should be narrowly defined as processes for remote proofing only (not general identity proofing practices). It was suggested to leave out the “what will they access?” portion of IV.a.1.1.
Method – Best to structure questions to ask about business processes around remote credentialing and identity proofing. for example:
* What process do you go through for credentialing?
* At what stage does the identity proofing occur.
* What method do you use for identity proofing?
* We want to identity the actors (photo ID office? IT?) and the steps
An alternative method would be to pose questions such as;
* how do you make initial contact?
* how do you establish the communication channel
* what are your identity proofing requirements?
* what do you do with the information?
Challenges Section – This may be best served by an open-ended question at the end of the survey.
Audience – AACRAO would be a good resource/audience. Reaching out to a distance and/or continuing education group would be productive. It was mentioned that a person from WCET is speaking on a the March 11 IAM Online with Mark S; she may be a resource.
Another audience to approach – those responsible for remote testing – ensuring that the person taking the test is the same as the person taking the class. Some third-party companies say they provide this service, and they know it is the same person coming back each time, but sometimes that is not bound to the student record on campus. It might be helpful to capture the names of the third-party vendors schools use for this purpose.
Another issue in this area are students that leave the campus and then return at some future time. If there were challenge questions in place when they left the institution, they may not remember those questions or the answers. In addition, they may have a NetID still in place, but no access privileges in place.
(AI) Mark will compile a summary of a related discussion on the IdM email
list.
