AACRAO/EDUCAUSE/Internet2 IdM Call: Notes from 6/1/2007
--------------------------------------------------------
Renee Frost, Internet2
Nancy Krogh, Idaho/AACRAO
RL Bob Morgan, U Washington
Renee Shuey, Penn State
Ann West, EDUCAUSE/Internet2

New Action Items
-----------------
- All should take a look at the vendor exhibitor list and recommend
possible vendors to include in these one-on-one discussions at the ATC
meeting.
- Nancy will contact SunGard about a f2f at the ATC meeting.
- Bob will contact Students Only about a f2f at the ATC meeting.
- Ann will check with Dean on the status of the Symplicity case study.
- Bob will check with Todd on his use case/problem explanation.

Previous Action Items
----------------------
- David will follow up with Dan and Doug regarding the NSC meeting and
ask about their attendance at the ATC.
- Ann will ping Doug and offer assistance.
- Nancy will contact Michael Sessa about possibly including NCS on EA2
and his attendance at the ATC.
- Ann will invite Joanne Berg, Registrar from Wisc, to join the group.
- Todd will write up the CollegeNet/Application Services issue and
explain the problem space
- Renee/Dean will write up the Symplicity case study from Penn State.

Notes
-----
- There are four IdM-related sessions at the AACRAO Technology
Conference:
Preconference seminar on Sunday
Intro to IdM track session on Monday morning
Federated IdM track session on Monday afternoon
IdM Roundtable discussion on Monday, end of day

- Outreach to other campuses
The roundtable seems like a great opportunity to share ideas and
concerns about where campuses are in this space. We'd like to use that
time to engage the attendees through the use of case studies or good
examples. [AI] Ann will check with Dean on the status of the Symplicity
case study. [AI] Bob will check with Todd on his use case/problem
explanation. These would also be helpful at the other sessions too.
Nancy mentioned that she would like our effort to yield some thoughts on
what AACRAO's role would be in this space.

The group then discussed a few questions that could be asked at the
roundtable to help us determine where the campuses/registrars/admissions
officers are in their IdM thinking. These include:
What services are you trying to automate?
Where are you spending your staff time?
What services are you interested in using that are offered by
vendors or providers outside your school? Are you
considering outsourcing?
Are the populations that you serve changing? For instance, are
you
expected to offer online services to pre-admitted
students,
alumni, and guests? What issues do you see?
Do you have any security concerns for your current systems and
data?

- Renee asked about bringing up Service Oriented Architecture in the
roundtable. Would this be of interest? SOA involves breaking large
applications into services and functions that can be assembled and
reused in a more flexible way. Introducing this topic might complicate
delivering the IdM issues, so decided not to emphasize the SOA term.

- Outreach to vendors
We've been in contact with a few vendors about fed idm and our plan is
to continue talking to them one-on-one and tailoring the message. Timing
for these meetings might be Sunday evening through Monday.

Students Only (Bjorn Larson) contacted us about fed idm after our ATC
presentation last year and is interested in discussing this further.
Bjorn will be at the ATC and [AI] Bob will contact him about a f2f
meeting.

Nancy has had some conversations with SunGard and [AI] will contact them
about an f2f at the meeting.

David is already in touch with the NSC and will be asking them about a
possible meeting per our last call.

[AI] All should take a look at the vendor exhibitor list and recommend
possible vendors to include in these one-on-one discussions.

- We ended the call with the confirmation that we need examples to
provide to campuses and vendors. We plan to have one more call to talk
about this effort for the ATC.

Tentative next call is 3:00 pm Eastern Friday June 15.
