Usability is certainly one of the keys to encouraging adoption and
collaboration
across the federations is vital. Since a lot of the JISC federation work
surrounds their "Collections" activities, usability fits very closely with
the
deployment of federation in libraries.
In the same spirit of collaboration, it would be helpful to get Nicole's take
on
how UK AMF (JISC) is planning to tackle the transition from Shibboleth 1.3 to
a
SAML 2 compliant federation. Does it sync with InCommon's roadmap to
achieve
SAML 2 compliance? Not only does SAML compliance provide wider
interoperability,
but new SAML 2 functionality may provide better ways of doing things,
especially
for WAYFless services.
JISC's documentation is very Shibboleth centric so their path may be to move
to
Shibboleth 2.0 first and then permit other non-Shibboleth IdPs and SPs
interoperate. However, at least a couple of their large SPs are planning to
transition to non-Shibboleth SP platforms. In the CAF we've already had a
couple
of issues with suppliers trying to use Sun OpenSSO and Oracles IdM suite
which are
not backward compatible with Shibboleth 1.3. Federation transition plans
and
vendor developments need to be in step to avoid confusion on the IdP side.
