FYI,

Turned on serving .gz versions of the UKf aggregates 3 or 4 days ago now, and
not a single reported problem yet. Of course, if anyone is having a problem,
they may be dealing with a cached copy of the MD and so we get reports when
the validity of the MD runs out, so in about a week and a half. I’ll let you
know if get anything.

But so far so good.

A few data points, just in case you’re interested!…

* Our aggregates compress to around 22% of their original size (roughly 6MB
instead of 28MB for our prodn aggregate).

* I’m seeing 40% of the full downloads (i.e. not conditional gets that report
no change) as being served as the compressed version. Shib IdP & SP generally
support this, but looks like Eduserv OpenAthens (which makes up maybe 1/3 of
the software in use on UKf?) doesn’t. If Shib is a far higher %age of InC,
then I’d expect your compression % to be higher.

* We’re saving about 30% of traffic compared to no compression (would be
higher for you guys, see above).

* (And just for fun, I figured out that using compression AND supporting
conditional gets reduces our traffic by around 87%).
