Turns out the AWS Cloudfront enables https automatically.
Testing from home SSL added ~100 ms to the pre-transfer/connection
setup time, and from an EC2 server it added about 80ms.

Custom SSL certs with Cloudfront require the clients support SNI, or
you can pay $600 a month for your own IP in the CDN.
