David,
Thanks for your and your colleague's comments. We've cut this version of the document, since our deadline had passed for the AACRAO IdM Workshop, but will keep your note to inform the next version.
See you next week!
Best,
Ann

Ann and IdM colleagues,
Finally coming up for air following our PeopleSoft Student transition...I had little time to do much else but PS Student and all its down-stream implications...it continues, but this breather is good -- first time in many years.
Passed along the "Issues Paper" to several colleagues, including Cornell graduate who worked for me as a student and is now a staff developer. His understanding of technologies from a user end is highly respected across campus as well his technical prowess. His comments are worthy of sharing:
"The doc makes a good argument for the importance of IdM on campus. It is high level enough that there are not many technical details to get lost in yet covers the big issues. Reading it I'm pretty sure my response would be "Yes this makes sense, what is my university doing? How can we do this?" It hits on some quantifiable and easy to grasp benefits of IdM -- privacy, money, consistent business process.
Not things to change in doc, but thoughts about how it can be interpreted.
1. User experience -- Well done IdM will ultimately enable the best applications and doc touches on that. My concern is people so often are willing to accept bad user experience that it's not as great a selling point without literally seeing the difference.
2. Also on the cautionary note -- the doc does such a good job of encouraging involvement in IdM that may give a false sense of how complicated it can be to do right. Whether it's an improved single sign on, shibboleth, signet/grouper, identity proofing practices, etc -- IdM does get technical, and complex. Don't want to scare people off, but don't want them to discover that on their own and scare themselves off :)
Will there be more resources shared with the registrars for the 'what's next?' "
His last point is well-taken...it's the "so what!". Also, achieving universality and single sign-on is attainable only if all the third parties can come together on the vision. Achieving single sign-on can be tough.
Hope to see you in Baltimore.
David

All,
Please see attached Issues Paper that we will be discussing on today's call.
The turn around time on review for this is very tight, so any comments you can bring to the call (or provide to the list), would be very helpful. We're also looking for a few quick quotes from folks about how IdM has helped you. You'll see where they are to be placed.
Thanks,
Ann and Karen
