**Action Items**

[AI] Tod Olson will contact Eva at LITA asking about a presentation through the standards committee. He will also contact the LITA office to discuss other possibilities.

[AI] Holley Eggleston will look at the call dates for NASIG and follow-up with the InCommon Library Services email list.

[AI] Holley Eggleston will look at the call dates for Timberline and follow-up with the email list.

[AI] Declan Fleming volunteered to do a thundertalk at the Access conference in Canada, using the UW walk-up presentation outline.

**Presentation possibilities**

Holley Eggleston will make a presentation at the Internet2 Member Meeting, based on the University of Washington solution for walk-up library users. There will be a webcast of the presentation, which will become part of the video archives for the meeting.

Steven Carmody has been in touch with Cliff Lynch at the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), which will host its fall task force meeting in Washington, DC, December 10-11 (http://www.cni.org/tfms/2007b.fall/index.html). David Kennedy has volunteered to do the UW walk-up presentation at that meeting.

There was a discussion about the ALA meetings in January and June; it is unlikely that our working group can get on the agenda for either one. ALA staff referred Steven to LITA (Library Information Technology Association – www.lita.org) as an alternative.

Tod Olson is involved with LITA and mentioned that the organization has a number of interest groups that have business meetings. LITA also sponsors its own regional and national conferences. Tod just finished a term as chair of the standards group, which may be an appropriate place for the UW presentation. [AI] Tod will contact Eva at LITA asking about a presentation through the standards committee. He will also contact the LITA office to discuss other possibilities.

There are also technical/library groups that attract their members from educational institutions and have good attendance from vendors. Holley mentioned the NASIG meeting, scheduled for June 2008 in Phoenix. She is on the coordination committee for the meeting and calls for presentations are going out now. [AI] Holley will look at the call dates and follow-up with the email list.

Timberline is acquisitions focused and has high proportion of vendors/librarians. This would be another good organization to approach. [AI] Holley will look at their call dates, as well.

Declan and Luc will both be at the Access Conference in Canada. They have presentations calls thundertalks. [AI] Declan volunteered to do a thundertalk using the UW walk-up presentation outline.

**Comments on Presentation**

There was a general discussion about the use of the ModAuthLocation attribute and whether it is the best solution for library walk-up users. The concern is that, once ModAuthLocation is used and a user is authenticated, there is no way to override it (other than closing the browser and starting a new session). A user accessing two Shib-enabled resources, for example, would be treated the same way for both. So, if that person logged in as a guest or generic user, he or she cannot change and use credentials without closing the browser and starting over. That doesn’t seem to be a good workflow.

The University of Washington overcomes this by providing two choices to a walk-up patron at a public terminal: to use UW credentials for login, or to log in as a guest. The guest option uses ModAuthLocation to insure access to licensed materials. This is a good first step toward reducing the need for IP-based authentication, which adds values for vendors (not having to maintain an IP management function).

More information about the UW system is available on the wiki:

**Next call – Friday, October 5, 1:00 p.m. (EDT)**
