TIER Software Update and “What is TIER” IAM Online
The January version of the IAM Online webinar series will feature an introduction to TIER - what it is, the objectives of the program, and what’s in it for you. Wednesday, January 25 at 2 pm ET. Details are at www.incommon.org/iamonline. Related to that, just before the holidays, the Internet2 community released the TIER Production Candidate (with Shibboleth, Grouper, and COmanage). See the detailsand download the software and kick the TIER tires. Baseline Expectations Approved; Implementation Plan Coming
At its December meeting, the InCommon Steering Committee approved the Baseline Expectations for Trust in Federation, proposed by the InCommon Assurance Advisory Committee. Included are expectations for Identity Providers, Service Providers, and the Federation Operator. An implementation plan is forthcoming.
Security Contacts in Metadata
InCommon recommends that participants add security contacts to entity metadata, especially if the metadata contains legacy security contacts. This is particularly important with the coming of SIRTFI, an international incident response framework for federations being driven by the international research community, and InCommon’s development of its own incident handling framework.
Shibboleth IdPv3 Upgrade Update
The good news is: 56% of Shibboleth Identity Providers in the InCommon Federation are running IdPv3. The bad news is that the rest aren’t and V2 has been end-of-life for six months. Make your upgrade plans today!
Steward Program Proof of Concept Underway
Following a meeting and planning session in late December, InCommon and MCNC (the North Carolina regional network) have embarked on a proof of concept of the InCommon Steward Program. The program extends the benefits of federation to K-12 schools and community colleges. The Steward (in this case MCNC) manages the onboarding of these institutions and InCommon provides the training, infrastructure, and operational expertise.

Research & Scholarship Category
The R&S Category list of Service Providers has increased by four during December and early January, bringing the total to 72 InCommon Service Providers in the international REFEDS R&S category. On the Identity Provider side, 46 InCommon Identity Providers have declared that they release the appropriate attribute set to the REFEDS category (see the lists here). An additional 85 IdPs release R&S attributes to R&S SPs registered by InCommon only. New InCommon Certificate Service Subscribers
As of January 6, 2017, 388 organizations subscribe to the InCommon Certificate Service, which provides unlimited certificates for all domains owned by a university at one annual fee. New subscribers during November included: American University of Sharjah College of Saint Benedict - St. John’s University
Duo Security Subscribers
As of January 6 2017, 121 organizations subscribe to the Duo Security multifactor authentication service offered through InCommon. November's new subscriber: Loyola Marymount University
