Server Certs for Use With IGTF Available

Digital certificates accredited by the Interoperable Global Trust Federation (IGTF) are now available to subscribers of Internet2’s InCommon Certificate Service. These certificates enable secure connections between services in XSEDE (the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment) and other cyberinfrastructure providers, including Open Science Grid and the European Grid Infrastructure. Our news feed has the complete announcement.

Five Working Groups to Move Services Forward

Five new community working groups have formed to address specific issues related to InCommon programs and services. All members of the InCommon community are welcome to participate. Topics range from "IdP of Last Resort" to "External Identities." A list and description of each is available on the wiki.

Certificate Service Adding Support for SHA-2 Profiles

Until just this year, virtually all SSL/TLS certificates were signed with the SHA-1 hashing algorithm. In November 2013, Microsoft announced that it had decided that it would no longer trust certificates signed with the SHA-1 hashing algorithm, effective January 2016. As a result, InCommon and its partner Comodo are in the process of making  available new certificate profiles that support SHA-2.

While virtually all mainstream applications (such as common web servers and popular web browsers) already support certs using SHA-2, legacy SHA-1 certs will remain available from the Certificate Service to accommodate any apps that haven't yet become SHA-2-ready.
