--------------------
InCommon at EDUCAUSE

There are 14 sessions focused on federating and identity management at this week’s EDUCAUSE annual conference. Sessions will cover identity management and governance, federating with federal agencies and the National Student Clearinghouse, and other topics. Here’s the list: www.incommonfederation.org/educause2009.html. Also, InCommon and the Internet2 Middleware Initiative are among the groups being honored with the Catalyst Award. This year’s award recognizes federated identity management.

--------------------
Library Collaboration Seeks Community Comment

The InCommon Library Services Collaboration Vendor Group has produced a best practices document for library resource providers and has started a registry of resources about service providers that are in various stages of federated access. The group invites comment from the community through December 15. The documents are available through the wiki space: https://spaces.internet2.edu/x/8oU0.

--------------------
2010 Fee Structure, Draft Business Plan Available

A recent InCommon Town Hall meeting concerning the federation’s 2010 fee structure and proposed business plan is archived and online, along with a number of documents. The information includes the draft business plan that merges InCommon and the Internet2 Middleware Initiative into the InCommon LLC. See https://spaces.internet2.edu/x/y4E0.

--------------------
InCommon Accepting Self-Signed Certificates

InCommon now accepts self-signed certificates. This begins a transition of the entire federation to self-signed certificates over the next two years. Beginning January 2010, InCommon will no longer issue certificates signed by the InCommon Certificate Authority. A wiki page includes more information, including an archived Adobe Connect session. See https://spaces.internet2.edu/x/boY0.

--------------------
NIH Library an Information Commons
The National Institutes for Health recently held an open house at its new library. Traditionally a place for books and journals, the facility has now become an information commons, a place for discovery, research assistance and learning. The library is accessible to members of InCommon. The open house agenda provides a nice overview of what’s available: http://nihlibrary.nih.gov/Features/OpenHouse2009.htm

New Participants

Since October 1, these identity providers and services providers have joined InCommon:

Identity Provider:

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Service Provider:

Good Steward Software

Good Steward Software is the publisher of EnergyCAP Energy Efficiency Software (www.energycap.com) and GreenQuest, a personal Web-based energy dashboard (www.mygreenquest.com). Good Steward is federating EnergyCAP, which is used by over a thousand multi-site organizations to track, audit and process utility bills; calculate carbon footprint; evaluate the cost avoidance (M&V) of energy retrofit projects; submit building data to Energy Star; and more. GreenQuest, which is not being federated at this time, is a customized website that sponsors provide to their community as a free energy conservation tool. With thirty years of industry-leading experience, Good Steward Software is a two-time winner of the Inc. 5000 award for fastest growing companies.
